One of the big successes was to take the students out of their groups and have them struggle on their own with the articles and the cartoons. Then the students were returned to their groups. This practice had them much more prepared to discuss what they had read and seen in the cartoons. The conversation was more robust and detailed.
One of the challenges was the need to front load some of the stories. The majority of the students did not have the background knowledge to effectively analyze these pieces. The other big challenge was to get the students to go beyond the details of the story. They spent too much time focused on describing the holster or that the bullets were posts. But they did not go deeper. A big challenge is getting the students to understand what they are looking at.
