In seventh grade we are also having an issue with a student in reading. This student reads at a low level, but is capable of engaging in discussion. We are now monitoring her for future evaluations. There was a suggestion to look at each student's response to a rubric designed to distinguish Social Emotional needs, processing needs, etc. with the team and focus our resources at that area.
In reading we finally got the 7th and 8th grade journalist articles. There was general agreement that the products submitted so far have been of a better quality. These articles are now in the process of being posted to the Eagle. The students like the fact that they have a voice. One of the big successes came from ground work set earlier in the year. The 1st quarter's emphasis on media has allowed the students to go deeper into their topics, this preparation has enabled them to excel at these pieces.
Math is working on a new unit. This unit is on transformations and how they help us animate images, particularly the electronic images we see in films. The connection with transformations will first be explored with the productions of zoetropes. These are ancient demonstrations of 2-D drawings that demonstrate motion. We have begun taking short, five second videos, with the goal of finding 12 pictures that can be made into zoetropes.
In science they have begun to build a new unit which is focusing on magnets. The next lab is discovering the iron in cheerios. Some difficulty in purposing the lesson and how it relates to magnets and electricity. There were several suggestions on how to purpose this lesson
Collaboration: The big issue was 312 again. The teachers in general are having some difficulty getting some students in 312 to collaborate. The question we are going to reflect on for the rest of the week is how we can get our students to hold each other accountable.
