We have been discussing choice of expression. Mr. McMahon discussed a newspaper project he is doing in his class and the parameters of the project. We looked at the rubric Ms. Carter uses for a similar project and also discussed where choice of expression was or could be integrated into the project.
Below are opportunities for choice of expression through project
-voice what/how you say story
-choosing what they want to talk about
-students are given parameters around their choice
-students need to have an understanding of why they are making the choice they are making
-why is it important for the students?
Other questions we still have are
-Where are there opportunities to build in choice of expression?
-How can we build more choices in through different types of media such as a podcast and documentaries?
-How are we scaffolding and allowing the students to find these different sources on their own?
Some things that we have learned from this discussion is through choice of expression students are able to choose the media they learn best from. We are providing opportunities for choice of expression by modeling and giving parameters to choose from. We have found that allowing the students to choose these on their own is very difficult for them. The students need to be taught different ways to express themselves. For example, after creating a newspaper, they could discuss other ways to present the information such as a radio broadcast or documentary. The students would be shown how to create these. Then the students could be given choice of expression on how they want to present the information to their audience.
